Human-centric, data-to-decision analytics for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

As companies engage in the implementation of analytics and data science applications, many challenges lie ahead. According to the Harvard Business Review, many data science applications fail due to poor goal definition, a lack of understanding of the key data, or a lack of focus on business value. We believe the best route to data analytics and particularly analytics for the Industrial Internet of Things, must have several key elements.

The winds of digital change in generation

The terms Big Data, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) are being used increasingly in articles and publications about energy - but what is the real intrinsic value customers are trying to achieve, and what are some of the specific types of analytics that can have a real impact on generating assets?

Smarter Wind Turbines Try to Squeeze More Power on Each Rotation

Makers of giant wind turbines are hoping that artificial intelligence can bring back some of the industry’s mojo. While developers have spent $1.1 trillion on new wind farms over the past dozen years -- helping transform the global energy landscape with renewable power -- more money is going into new solar systems these days. Also, governments are phasing out subsidies, including programs in the U.S. that have offered $22 billion in tax breaks to turbine projects in the past 15 years.

Renewable energy digitalisation to reduce O&M costs

Digitally enhanced services for wind power could reduce operations and maintenance (O&M) costs as well as the levelised cost of energy (LCOE), consultancy Totaro & Associates believes. Prices could rise as digital services become more beneficial to renewable energy assets, the consultants state in the Renewable Energy Digitalization Innovation report.

The Latest Must-Have Service Tool for the Industrial IoT? Natural Language Generation Software.

"For 21st-century field service, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a gift that keeps on giving—and what it’s giving in droves is data, massive amounts of it. As even more industrial companies connect their physical assets to the internet, they’re finding that they need effective tools to harness the reams of data flowing from the IIoT. Natural language generation (NLG) technology, an application of artificial intelligence, is becoming an invaluable tool to help industrial companies get the most value from their operational data."

Wind Power & Renewable Energy: Benefits and Methods to Implementing Near Real-Time Analytics & Automation

While wind turbine manufacturers and wind farm operators have developed suites of advanced applications to help diagnose operating anomalies on wind turbines, many are still taking a “trip first, analyze later” approach. This approach made sense when the application of near real-time analytics was not cost effective. However today, near real-time analytics can be applied seamlessly within the operational workflow of existing monitoring operations, resulting in several key benefits. First, real-time analytics enable operators to avoid tripping turbines needlessly and reset tripped turbines faster, resulting in more power output due to higher availability.

How Small Businesses Can Use Artificial Intelligence to Outrun the Competition

"When you hear artificial intelligence (AI), you may think of things like "The Terminator," top research universities or huge tech companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft. For small businesses, the topic may seem too complicated and or too expensive to deal with, and the natural reaction may be to ignore it and go back to work."
